God Did not Give us the Ten Commandments to Make Us Right with Him

The Ten Commandments: A Path to Grace and Redemption

Justified by Faith

Introduction

The Ten Commandments, a set of moral and ethical guidelines, were not bestowed upon humanity as a means to achieve righteousness before God. Instead, they serve as a mirror, revealing the depth of our imperfections and sinfulness. The Scriptures, particularly Romans 3:21, emphasize that no one can attain righteousness through adherence to the law; rather, the law illuminates our inherent sinfulness.

Romans 3: 21
Therefore, no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

Acknowledging Human Imperfection:

As finite beings, we fall short of God’s glory and are incapable of fully obeying the laws. Isaiah 64:6 vividly describes our human righteousness as comparable to filthy rags. The impossibility of perfection in our own efforts becomes evident, emphasizing our need for divine righteousness.

Isaiah 64: 6
But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

The Law and its Consequences:

The law, while providing guidance, also carries the weight of consequences for those who fail to adhere to it. Consequently, if God’s promise were solely contingent on law obedience, faith in Jesus Christ would seemingly be rendered meaningless.

Faith in Christ: The Key to Redemption:

God’s promise of a new covenant, offering a restored relationship with Him and the removal of sin-induced separation, can only be realized through faith in Christ. This faith enables us to receive God’s righteousness as a gift of grace. The promise extends universally to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ’s Fulfillment:

Contrary to abolishing the commandments and the writings of the prophets, Jesus Christ came to fulfill their purpose. The commandments were given to illuminate our sinful nature, while Jesus, the embodiment of grace and mercy, reveals the path to redemption. Through His sacrifice, believers receive the righteousness of God, becoming blameless in His sight.

The Commandment of Faith and Love:

But this is now the commandment of God that we should follow; to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another. This transformation is beautifully encapsulated in 1 John 3:23-24, emphasizing that by adhering to this commandment, believers abide in God, and He in them. The Holy Spirit becomes the testimony of this profound connection.
1 John 3: 23-24
And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit Whom He has given us.

Conclusion:

In understanding the true purpose of the Ten Commandments, we find not a rigid set of rules for self-justification but a divine revelation of our need for redemption. Through faith in Jesus Christ, believers receive God’s righteousness, and the commandments take on a new form—a call to faith and love that binds us to the very essence of God’s redemptive plan.
